Update on Prairie Stewardship Planning Process
Over the past three years, San Juan Island National Historical Park has sought public input for the Draft Prairie Stewardship Plan and Environmental Impact Statement. This has been conducted through a series of public scoping meetings, workshops, and an education symposium.
The park is proposing to restore a functioning native island prairie ecosystem at American Camp on the southern end of San Juan Island and at English Camp's Young Hill. As identified in the General Management Plan (NPS 2008), protecting and conserving the rare island prairie ecosystem, including re-establishment of component rare species and ensuring their perpetuation for the enjoyment of future generations, is integral to the purpose and mission of the park.
There have been many public concerns and issues raised regarding this planning effort. These comments and concerns are summarized in documents available on the NPS PEPC website: http://parkplanning.nps.gov/projectHome.cfm?projectID=42945. All of these comments are being considered in the formulation of alternatives and the draft environmental impact statement.
The next step in the planning process is to publish the Draft Prairie Stewardship Plan and Environmental Impact Statement. The document is anticipated to be released Winter 2015 and will provide another opportunity for public involvement and comment. We encourage you to stay informed and engaged in this planning process by making sure you are on the park's mailing list and going to the PEPC website.
