Press Release Sandy Hook Multi-Use Path Phase 3 EA

The NPS has made available for review the Environmental Assessment (EA) for the Multi-Use Path, Phase 3 at the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area. This project would extend the existing Multi-Use Path (MUP) to continue to provide safe and enjoyable nonmotorized use for pedestrians and bicyclists that was begun with the first two phases of the MUP. NPS began developing the initial segments of the MUP in 2000 to promote nonmotorized use of the park and create a safer environment for visitors. There are still areas where pedestrians and bicyclists must share the roads with motorized vehicles, creating potentially unsafe conditions. Phase 3 would close these gaps in the existing trail system. The participation of the public is very important to the success of this project.
