Strawberry Creek Restoration Environmental Assessment
The Strawberry Creek Restoration Environmental Assessment includes 3 alternatives, a no-action alternative and two alternatives to restore habitat for threatened coho salmon and steelhead trout near Orick in northwestern Humboldt County, California. The creek once supported healthy populations of these and other anadromous fish. Clearing of the original forest and riparian wetlands, straightening the original meandering stream, and draining to create pastureland for livestock grazing created conditions that allowed invasive grasses to fill in the channel. Proposed restoration includes removal of invasive grasses, excavating a new channel to create a free-flowing stream, installing wood and rock structures to control channel grade and provide fish habitat features, and replanting native riparian vegetation along the new channel.
Proposed restoration have short-term and long-term effects on soils, hydrology, water quality, wetlands, vegetation, wildlife, and fish, including threatened species of anadromous salmonids.
