Scoping: Hunter Mountain Pinyon Pine Ecosystem Fire Treatment and Study

The National Park Service (NPS) at Death Valley National Park (Park) is seeking public comments regarding a proposed project to implement a prescribed fire of approximately 50 acres, concurrent with a study of fire effects on the pinyon pine ecosystem of Hunter Mountain. This proposed action is consistent with the Park's Fire Management Plan of 2009.

Pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and Council on Environmental Quality (CEQ) regulations, the NPS is conducting public scoping in order to identify potential issues and shape potential alternatives. Comments are currently being accepted on this project. Comments must be received no later than April 13, 2012. Public comment may be submitted directly online, or in writing to the address below.

Before including your address, phone number, e-mail address, or other personal identifying information in your comment, be advised that your entire comment -including your personal identifying information –may be made publicly available at any time. While you can ask us in your comment to withhold from public review your personal identifying information, we cannot guarantee that we will be able to do so.

Because of the remote nature of the Hunter Mountain area, and the difficulty accessing it along 4WD roads, Death Valley National Park is organizing two tours for the interested public of the site proposed for the prescribed fire and ecosystem study. The dates for these public tours will be March 20 and April 5. To find out more information about these tours or to sign up, please contact Kelly Fuhrmann at 760-786-3253 or Kelly_Fuhrmann@nps.gov.
