Finding of No Significant Impact for Segments 1 and 4 Stevens Canyon Road Safety Improvements and Rehabilitation

A Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the implementation of plans to resurface, restore and rehabilitate 10.09 miles of Stevens Canyon Road. The purpose of this project is to improve the safety for all park users traveling on Stevens Canyon Road and to reduce the possibility of road failures and maintenance costs, while ensuring that this work has little or no impact on the adjacent environment.

The NPS selected the Proposed Action Alternative, which will resurface, restore, and rehabilitate Stevens Canyon Road and other related facilities, including bridges, culverts, guardwalls, retaining walls, turnouts, and trails. The improvements will occur along two segments of the road, totaling 10.09 miles of the 19-mile road. Segment 1 begins at the Nisqually-Paradise Road intersection and extends for 4.83 miles to Stevens Creek Bridge. Segment 4 begins at the Backbone Ridge Viaduct and continues for 5.26 miles to the intersection with Washington State Route (SR) 123.

The Proposed Action Alternative was described in detail in the environmental assessment (EA), which was available for public comment for a 30-day public review ending on April 30, 2010. There were no modifications or revisions to the proposal due to public comment. There were some changes to the text of the EA based on new information. These text changes were incorporated into Errata for the EA.
