27373 - Sny Magill Fishing Tournament

The Sny Magill Mississippi River access road, parking lot, boat launch ramp, dock and Mississippi River water surface immediately along the unit's shoreline are within the boundary of Effigy Mounds. The high impact recreation activity of boat launching and parking vehicles for the purpose of fishing / ice fishing has a long history that predates ownership by the monument. The river access is one of the busiest on along river and is situated in the geographic heart of the FWS Upper Mississippi Wildlife Refuge.

Effigy Mounds has maintained a separate walking access to the Sny Magill American Indian Mound Group located 1/8 of a mile north of the river access parking lot. The monument has traditionally cooperated with the Iowa DNR to maintain the (gravel) access road, parking lot, boat ramp and dock through long term special park use permits and currently (we are developing) a general agreement. The FWS maintains an educational / informational bulletin board type kiosk at the boat landing through a long term Special Park uses permit; they also observe and access the refuge via the boat access for law enforcement and safety purposes.
