Streelow Creek Trail Improvements

Streelow Creek Trail was established on an old logging road along Streelow Creek, a tributary of Prairie Creek. The purpose of this project is to stabilize the failing logging road that is used as a hike/bike trail and as administrative access to future watershed restoration sites. The road is adjacent to Streelow Creek, which contains spawning habitat for threatened salmonids. Two alternatives are analyzed in the environmental assessment. The no action alternative includes maintenance of the road surface but no treatments to upgrade drainage structures to current standards or reduce erosion from failing road segments. The proposed action, which is also the environmentally preferred alternative, involves improvements to or removal of the old road to ensure long-term stability of the road/trail and to reduce the potential for future erosion into a fish-bearing stream. One portion of the road will be upgraded for administrative vehicle access to future watershed restoration project sites. Another portion of the road will be converted to a trail that will no longer be accessible to motor vehicles. Moderate beneficial long-term effects to listed salmonids would accrue from the project by improving fish passage, restoring portions of the watershed adjacent to spawning streams, and reducing the threat of erosion. This project will require closure of the trail for two years. This lengthy closure is needed because the heavy equipment work and tree falling must occur outside restriction periods for work in endangered species habitat; work cannot be completed in one construction season. Two other bicycle trails in the vicinity of the Streelow Creek Trail will be available for bicycle use while the Streelow Creek Trail is closed.
