Categorical Exclusion for Abandoned Mine Sites in Glacier NP
Initially Glacier NP had proposed to prepare an Environmental Assessment and initiated public scoping to look at alternatives for a total of six mines and eight mine features. After conducting field suveys and further defining the proposed action, the NPS has decided to close only one site, the Van Pelt #1 shaft, with a grate or bat accessible gate. For the remaining sites, the proposed action is to place a sign indicating the site is an abandoned mine site.
Glacier NP is conducting public review on the proposed categorical exclusion to provide the public an opportunity to review the park's decision. Comments are due March 22, 2009.
