Environmental Assessment Georges Island Pier Improvement Project Boston Harbor Islands National Park Area

The National Park Service (NPS), in a cooperative undertaking with Massachusetts Department of Conservation and Recreation (DCR) proposes to replace the deteriorated pier facility on Georges Islands. The purpose of this project is to replace the pier facility in a manner that protects the cultural and environmental resources of the Boston Harbor Islands national park area. The Environmental Assessment (EA) was released today and is enclosed for your review and comment.

This action is needed to accommodate present and future visitor use, preserve the historical character of the island, enhance visitor enjoyment of the island and improve public safety

The EA examines five alternatives; a no-action alternative and four action alternatives to replace the pier facility. The no-action alternative describes the condition of the deteriorated pier facility and the action alternatives address the removal of the existing pier and construction of a new pier facility in the same location. Two action alternatives (B and C) propose a single basin pier facility and two action alternatives (D and E) propose a dual basin pier facility.
