Wayfinding and New Pedestrian Guides

This project will design, fabricate and install pedestrian wayfinding and regulatory signage on the National Mall and East Potomac Park to meet a critical deferred maintenance need. The fabrication and installation of the wayfinding signs meet the requirements for a Categorical Exclusion (C.5. Installation of signs, displays, and kiosks) under the National Environmental Policy Act. The wayfinding project also meets the requirements for streamlined review under the recently revised Programmatic Agreement (2008) between the National Council of State Historic Preservation Officers (NCSHPO), the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) and the NPS because the sign projects adheres to the NPS Sign program guidelines (III, B, 10, b).

However, as pedestrian guides PG001 and PG002 are adaptations of the NPS servicewide standards, they are subject to standard Section 106 consultation under the National Historic Preservation Act. Therefore, as part of the Section 106 process, the NPS is seeking public review and comment on the design of these new sign types (Pedestrian Guides PG001 and PG002).

The attached documents include a context and overview of the wayfinding project and an introduction to the proposed pedestrian guide sign types (PG001 and PG002). The wayfinding overview document introduces the wayfinding project and allows the reader to understand the new pedestrian guide signs within the context of the comprehensive project. The pedestrian guide sign document provides the details of the new sign type proposed for the National Mall. The NPS is seeking public comment on these new sign types (Pedestrian Guides PG001 and PG002).
