Scoping Announcement

In accordance with the National Environment Policy Act of 1969, as amended, the National Park Service (NPS) is in the early stages of preparing an environmental assessment (EA) which will analyze the environmental effects of a range of project alternatives to repair the dock structures at Kalaupapa National Historical Park, Moloka`i, Hawai`i.

Scoping is the first step for involving individuals, organizations, agencies, and interested parties in the planning process. Public scoping is an early phase of the planning process, which is designed to obtain public input on issues and areas of concern related to the project, including a suitable range of alternatives, the nature and extent of potential environmental impacts and benefits, and appropriate mitigation strategies.

Because the environmental assessment will analyze many ecological and social issues, your participation is encouraged and needed. We look forward to your participation in this process and believe that it will help ensure that your concerns and ideas regarding repair of the pier and associated structures are adequately considered and evaluated in the environmental assessment. When the environmental assessment is complete, it will be made available for your review and comment.
