Entrance Sign Replacement

Superintendent Doug Neighbor has announced the completion of an Environmental Assessment for proposed new signs at Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve. The National Park Service is proposing to construct new roadside entrance signs and pullouts at two locations as well as to place additional directional signs along U.S. Highway 20/26/93 between the towns of Arco and Carey, Idaho. The entrance signs will mark the boundaries of Craters of the Moon National Preserve and the expanded boundaries of the overall Monument for both east and west bound travellers. The public is invited to provide comments on the proposal. This Environmental Assessment has been developed to consider alternative actions for this project and to identify impacts on Monument resources.

These signs will welcome visitors as they arrive, providing a gateway that marks the beginning of their Craters of the Moon experience. Access will be provided to the signs so that visitors may practice the time-honored tradition of taking a family photograph at the entrance to a national park. The signs have been designed in close collaboration with our partner agency the Bureau of Land Management (BLM) to represent not only a unit of the National Park System but also a unit of the BLM's National Landscape Conservation System. For more information about this project or to receive a hard copy of the document, please contact John Apel, Resource Management Chief, at Craters of the Moon National Monument and Preserve at 208-527-3257.
