Fire Facility Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument Environmental Assessment/Assessment of Effect

The National Park Service (NPS) is planning for a Fire Facility at Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. This project would be located southeast of the existing visitor center. The purpose of the proposed facility is to improve operational efficiency by consolidating equipment and employee workspaces. As proposed the facility would consist of approximately 1,850 square feet of work and storage space. The facility would house and protect two NPS engines.

The Environmental Assessment/Assessment of Effect (EA/AEF) analyzes the impacts of two alternatives (1) no action and (2) construction of the Fire Facility southeast of the visitor center. Impacts to geology/soils, vegetation, wildlife, special status species, archeological resources, historic structures, park operations, and visual quality are described in this document.
