Valles Caldera Fire Management Plan FONSI 2025

The NPS prepared an Environmental Assessment (EA) to examine alternative actions and environmental impacts associated with the proposal to implement a Fire Management Plan (FMP) at Valles Caldera National Preserve (Valles Caldera). After thorough analysis of potential resource impacts, consultation with agencies, and review of stakeholder and public comments, the Multiple Strategy Wildland Fire Management Program (Alternative B) was selected.

The selected action best meets the purpose and need for implementation of a fire management plan without causing significant impacts to park resources and the human environment. The NPS has determined the selected action does not constitute a major federal action meeting the criteria that normally requires preparation of an environmental impact statement (EIS). This finding is based on consideration of the Council on Environmental Quality, DOI, and NPS guidance on the criteria for significance regarding the potentially affected environment and degrees of the effects of the impacts described in the EA. Based on the foregoing, it has been determined that an EIS is not required for this project, and, the NPS has prepared this Finding of No Significant Impact.
