Removal of Non-Contributing Buildings - Link Dairy Barn, Silo, Pole Barn, Vehicle Shed, Shed

Fredericksburg and Spotsylvania National Military Park proposes to remove five structures, located at the Link Farm on the Wilderness Battlefield - one (1) dairy barn, one (1) silo, (1) pole barn, one (1) vehicle shed, and one (1) shed.

The barn was constructed ca1935, according to the 2021 Wilderness Battlefield Cultural Landscape Report, and the silo and vehicle shed may date from that period as well, while the pole barn and small concrete block shed are possibly later additions to the property. The barn is post and beam construction with wood lap siding and metal roof. The lower level has a concrete floor, and the second level is the hay loft area. The barn has a silo, which is concrete in construction. The pole barn is simple pole frame construction with wood lap siding, a dirt floor, and metal roof. The vehicle shed is a wood frame construction with wood lap siding, a concrete footer with a cement block knee wall, and metal roof. The small shed has concrete walls and a metal roof.

Per the Park's current General Management Plan, "non-historic structures will be removed from the historic scene as they are acquired." The Park now proposes to remove these five buildings. Work will consist of the demolition and complete removal of debris from the structures. It will also include the breaking down of foundation walls to a level two (2) feet below ground level and removing this debris. It will also include the removal of the concrete slabs for these structures. This project also consists of the work required to maintain the disturbed areas as open and not to pursue forestation. Whether this will be accomplished through maintenance by agriculture or routing mowing/bush hogging has not been determined. The project covers any necessary filling, compacting, grading, or spreading of topsoil.
