Environmental Assessment for North District Fire Cache
The Superintendent of Canaveral National Seashore announces that an Environmental Assessment (EA) to construct a fire cache in the North District is available for public review.
The North District of Canaveral National Seashore is located just south of New Smyrna Beach and Bethune Beach, Florida. The volatile nature of the Seashore's vegetation and high occurrence of lightning strikes and arson makes wildfire a constant threat. In order to provide a better response to wildland fire, the National Park Service proposes to construct a fire cache 75 yards east of the ranger station. This building would house a small engine and fire supplies.
An EA has been prepared which discusses the range of alternatives that were considered in addressing the issue: 1) no action (continue to use the converted single car garage, which is too small to house an engine, as the fire cache); 2) build a new structure large enough for an engine and support vehicle, across the beach road from the ranger station; 3) construct the new facility next to the ranger station; 4) erect the new structure at the maintenance compound south of the ranger station
We would appreciate any comments or concerns you may have on the proposed project.
