Coastal Alaska Park Units Fire Management Plan Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI)

The National Park Service (NPS) prepared an Environmental Assessment (EA) to analyze three action alternatives and environmental impacts associated with the Coastal Alaska (AK) Fire Management Plan (FMP). The FMP provides direction and establishes specific procedures to guide wildland fire program activities within five coastal AK park units: Aniakchak National Monument and Preserve, Glacier Bay National Park and Preserve, Kenai Fjords National Park, Klondike Gold Rush National Historical Park, which includes the Chilkoot National Historic Trail park unit, and Sitka National Historical Park.

The NPS selected Alternative 3, the preferred alternative, authorizing the implementation of fuels management and wildfire response actions as it best meets the purpose of, and need for action, without causing significant impacts on park resources. With the authorization of this NEPA decision, AK Regional Fire Program managers in coordination with park Superintendents will complete park level Annual Implementation Plans requiring additional site-specific analyses, mitigations, and further compliance. Annual Implementation Plans will be generated annually, prior to the annual fire season (March/April), and parks will decide methods of additional public communication as appropriate.

A summary of the decision and responses to public comments can be found in the Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI), which was approved by the NPS Alaska Regional Director on August 19, 2024.
