Cyclic Masonry Repointing and Install of Copper Gutters

This proposed project includes the cleaning and removal of biological growth using water and brush and joint preparation to a depth of 1/2 to 1' in advance of repointing of six chimneys at the George Washington Birthplace National Monument Memorial House Museum and Colonial Kitchen. At the Memorial House, the 4 chimneys are 7'ft at the base and rise to approximately 34' height. The 2 chimneys at the Colonial Kitchen are 7' at the base and rise to a height of 30'. All are built using both a Flemish and English bond brick pattern. New mortar will be matched in color and texture to the historic mortar and the same pointing style will be used.

This project also includes the installation of copper half round gutters and downspouts on both buildings, as recommended to help control the rainwater flow around the building to limit the water intrusion and see page in the basements. The copper half rounds will match gutters on existing buildings in the Historic Area reflecting the Colonial Revival style. The gutters at the Memorial House Museum run 53' in length and downspouts will run 16'. The gutters for the Colonial Kitchen run 29' in length and downspouts will run 8'.
