Fire Management Zone Map

Map of Great Basin National Park showing two proposed fire management zones: the Suppression Zone and the Management Zone.

Within the Suppression Zone, all fires would be suppressed or put out to protect infrastructure, areas of high visitor use, and natural and cultural resources. A variety of fuels treatments, including manual, mechanical, chemical, seeding, and prescribed fire, would be used to restore native plant communities, prevent catastrophic wildfire and to protect life and property from wildfire.

In the Management Zone, the primary goal is to protect life and property by actively returning fire to its natural role on the landscape. Fuels treatments, including manual, mechanical, chemical, seeding, wildfire, and prescribed fire, would be used in this zone to restore native plant communities and prevent catastrophic wildfire. Wildfires would be evaluated for appropriate response based on seasonality, fuels conditions, national and regional preparedness level, and sound risk analysis. Fires in this zone may be managed for resource benefit objectives where identified risk is both manageable and acceptable.
