Buxton Southern Groin Replacement

Cape Hatteras National Seashore » Buxton Southern Groin Replacement » Document List

The National Park Service (NPS) has received a special use application from Dare County to remove and replace the southernmost groin within Cape Hatteras National Seashore (Seashore). The project area is located just inside the Seashores boundary and out into the Atlantic Ocean near the village of Buxton, North Carolina. Dare County proposes to repair the entire southernmost groin in conjunction with the Countys proposed beach nourishment projects adjacent to the villages of Avon and Buxton in 2026. The NPS is only authorized to permit Dare County actions within the Seashores boundary which would be from Mean Low Water line (MLW) towards the dunes, where approximately 300 feet of the groin is proposed to be repaired. Dare County is also seeking the appropriate permits from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the state of North Carolina for the remainder of the groin which extends into the Atlantic Ocean.

The purpose of the southern groin project is to address the downdrift of sand by the continual accretion or buildup of sand to provide shoreline protection of NC Highway 12 and the supporting infrastructure.

The NPS is seeking public comment on the repair of the groin and will host a public meeting on September 3rd at 5:30 - 6:30 PM at the Fessenden Center in Buxton N.C.. A newsletter is provided with additional information on the project for the public to provide comments on.
