Butterfield Overland National Historic Trail Comprehensive Plan

National Trails Office » Butterfield Overland National Historic Trail Comprehensive Plan

Dear Reader:

The National Park Service thanks you for your review and comment on the draft Comprehensive Plan for the Butterfield Overland National Historic Trail.

The Butterfield Overland National Historic Trail commemorates one of the most significant overland transportation and mail routes in the history of the American Southwest. The trail connected communities across multiple states and helped shape the development, commerce, and cultural exchange of the region. This planning effort provides an opportunity to establish a long-term vision for the preservation, interpretation, management, and public enjoyment of the trail and its associated resources.
The draft plan outlines proposed goals, strategies, and actions intended to guide the future administration of the trail while protecting its historic, cultural, scenic, and recreational values.

The public review and comment period was open from June 4, 2026 through July 3, 2026.

We are in the process of reviewing comments received and will use this information to help inform the preparation of the final comprehensive plan.

Thank you for your interest in the Butterfield Overland National Historic Trail and for participating in this important planning effort.

Sincerely,
Patrick Malone, Superintendent
Butterfield Overland National Historic Trail
National Park Service
