The National Park Service (NPS) is developing a Wild Caves and Karst Management Plan/Environmental Assessment for Great Basin National Park (GRBA).
The Wild Caves and Karst Management Plan (WCKMP) guides management for the thirty-nine known wild caves and 41,000 acres of karst landscape (where caves can form) that are contained within Great Basin National Park. Caves and karst are significant natural resources and many contain significant cultural resources. The primary goal of the WCKMP is to manage the caves in a manner that will preserve and protect cave resources and processes while allowing for respectful scientific use and recreation in selected caves. More specifically, the intent of this plan is to manage wild caves in GRBA to maintain their geological, scenic, educational, cultural, biological, hydrological, paleontological, and recreational resources in accordance with applicable laws, regulations, and current guidelines such as the Federal Cave Resource Protection Act and NPS Management Policies.
The plan was open for public comment from May 15 to June 14, 2019. A public meeting was held at Great Basin National Park on June 3, 2019. Based on reviews, the plan was revised and an environmental assessment (EA) for it completed. This EA is open for public review from July 15 to August 14, 2019.
In addition, a Lehman Caves Management Plan EA will be available for public review during the same time period, and is available on the National Park Service Planning, Environment, and Public Comment (PEPC) website: https://parkplanning.nps.gov/LehmanCavesMP.
