Revel Blue Ridge Run - Special Use Permit

The Blue Ridge Parkway is reviewing a Special Use Permit (SUP) request for a running event which would involve closure of the motor road on Saturday, May 2, 2020. Requests for events which are not sponsored or promoted by the National Park Service are evaluated pursuant to the National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and the National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) and if allowed, take place under an SUP with specific conditions.

This proposed event may host 2,000 participants running from Parkway milepost 377 to 383, near Asheville, North Carolina (please see attached map). In consideration for the safety of the large number of participants, motorists, and all park visitors, if a permit is issued a full two-lane closure of the motor road would be proposed for the duration of the event, to potentially include up to a 24 hour period. Access to all other sections of the Parkway motor road, as well as non-roadway areas such as trails, would remain unchanged.

If permitted, the NPS would utilize cost recovery methods to recoup from the event organizer the total actual cost of all NPS personnel and equipment utilized to issue the permit and conduct the closure.

Blue Ridge Parkway management is interested in hearing from the public regarding impacts of a potential short term full closure of the motor road as a condition of this SUP.
