This plan addresses how to enhance physical and programmatic accessibility to ensure people with disabilities are provided the opportunity to have more equivalent park experiences. Baseline data is collected to identify all park areas, the core park experiences, and visitor services, activities and programs associated with park areas. Site visits are conducted to assess existing accessibility of priority park areas and to identify solutions that could provide better access to people with disabilities. Implementation strategies with target timeframes and priorities for removing barriers are created, addressing improvements needed for people with mobility, vision, hearing, intellectual and developmental disabilities. Site plans with annotations and the initial implementation strategy spreadsheet help guide the park in incorporating universal design and accessibility principles in planning, developing, and constructing projects, and in delivering products and services.
The National Park Service asked for public review and comments on the draft plan during the 30-day comment period from 11/7 - 12/7/2024 because public feedback is an important step in the completion of the plan. Park staff's efforts did not result in public comments. This plan and its recommended action items are not definitive solutions but describe a strategy to help park staff reach a more accessible destination. Park staff welcome further suggestions from all interested parties who want to continue to improve this important national resource.
