Description:
The New Jersey State Historic Preservation Office (NJSHPO) and the Advisory Council on Historic Preservation (ACHP) will join the National Park Service (NPS) to co-host a public meeting as part of the NPSs consultation responsibilities under Section 106 of the National Historic Preservation Act. The meeting will be held in the Chapel at Fort Hancock on Tuesday, October 26, 2004, from 1:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m. Fort Hancock is located in the Sandy Hook Unit of Gateway National Recreation Area.

The public is invited to participate in the meeting, which is intended to provide a valuable opportunity for the NJSHPO and the ACHP to hear first-hand the interested publics views on historic preservation issues relating to the Fort Hancock Rehabilitation and Preservation Project. The focus of the meeting is to allow the NJSHPO and the ACHP to consider the views of the interested public concerning measures to be included in a programmatic agreement (PA), now in draft. The PA is intended to ensure protection of the historic values of Fort Hancock and Sandy Hook Proving Ground Historic District, a National Historic Landmark.

Comments on the draft PA will be accepted for five weeks following the meeting. The public comment period ends on November 30, 2004. These comments and public comments previously provided will be given full consideration by the ACHP, the SHPO and the NPS.
