Project Description
Lower Lehman Creek Campground was constructed in the 1950s and is one of six campgrounds in Great Basin National Park. Lower Lehman Campground is sought out for its recreational vehicle (RV) accessibility with six pull-through sites and it is the only campground in the park that remains open year-round. Within the last 10 years, five of the six campgrounds in the park have undergone rehabilitation modernizing the amenities and access. Lower Lehman Campground will be the last to undergo a modernization improvement along the Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive, the area most used by visitors. Great Basin National Park proposes to expand the campground by adding new units, and refurbishing or removing some existing units pending final design. The expansion of the campground will provide the much-needed space for the growing number of visitors. The existing potable water line will be reconstructed to comply with Nevada State Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ) requirements.
The campground is open year-round and has 11 sites. The National Park Service is considering improvements to the existing campground such as upgrades to fire rings and picnic tables, addition of an asphalt pull-off at the trailhead and fee station, and improvements to the existing vault toilets. New campsites are being considered just to the east of the current campground. The new campsites would be mostly 40 or 50-foot back-in sites, with one or more accessible pull-through sites. The new campsites would be served by a new vault toilet and a new water line. Additional options being considered include realigning the campground entrance to allow better access for vehicles travelling in either direction on Wheeler Peak Scenic Drive.
The National Park Service (NPS) announces the availability of the Finding of No Significant Impact (FONSI) for the Lower Lehman Creek Campground Environmental Assessment (EA) at Great Basin National Park (Park). The public comment period for the environmental assessment was from March 14 to April 13, 2022. Alternative 1, the preferred alternative, was selected. Under the selected alternative, the NPS will:
• Increase the number of campsites from 11 to 20, including the host site and two accessible campsites.
• Remove Campsite #7 and restore wetlands.
• Add ten new campsites located east of the existing campground loop.
• Update a fire rings, picnic tables, and campsite markers at each campsite.
• Install a new waterline distribution system to service the campground facilities.
• Improve the fee station/trailhead to match Upper Lehman Campground, including an asphalt pull-off.
• Improve concrete at the existing vault toilets.
• Add a vault toilet at the new campground loop.
• Realign the campground entrance from Wheeler Peak Road to allow better access for recreational vehicles and vehicles pulling trailers.
This project will ensure that the Lower Lehman Campground will continue to provide outstanding outdoor recreational opportunities that improve the quality of life for the visiting public while interpreting a historic development period of the Park. The campground is an outstanding recreational development in the natural landscape.
