Boundary Adjustment Study - General Management Plan Amendment and Environmental Assessment

The Boundary Adjustment Study and General Management Plan Amendment for Homestead National Monument of America will be released for 30-day public comment on October 3. The document evaluates the appropriateness of adding adjacent lands to the boundary of the park, but any expansion of park boundaries requires congressional action. A public presentation of the plan will be held at an Open House on Monday, October 20, from 6:00 to 7:00 pm, at the Homestead National Monument of America Education Center.

This Boundary Adjustment Study, General Management Plan Amendment and Environmental Assessment has been prepared in compliance with the NPS Boundary Adjustment Criteria and the National Environmental Policy Act to provide the decision-making framework that: 1) analyzes the NPS criteria to ensure the properties being studied warrant possible inclusion, 2) if said parcels were acquired how they would be zoned, effectively amending the existing General Management Plan 3) analyzes a reasonable range of alternatives to meet the project's purpose and needs, and 4) evaluates potential impacts to cultural, natural, land use, viewshed and park management resources. The document evaluates the foreseeable potential impacts to resources including cultural landscape features, the bur oak forest, adjacent land uses and immediate viewshed, and park operations. The Preferred Alternative is not anticipated to have any impacts that would significantly impact those resources.

The document is available for review online on the NPS Park Planning website, where comments can be submitted. The 30-day comment period closes on November 1 at midnight. All comments will be analyzed and taken into account before issuing the approved and signed Boundary Adjustment Study and General Management Plan Amendment.
