Alaska Coastal Park Units Fire Management Plan
Alaska Regional Office » Alaska Coastal Park Units Fire Management Plan » Document List
The purpose in taking action is to create park-specific FMPs in order to meet the most current NPS and federal policies. The need for taking action is to have a plan that would reduce the risk of wildfire to human communities, provide park managers direction and guidance to assist when making decisions related to wildland fire activities, and maintain or restore the integrity of park ecosystems. The NPS' preferred alternative proposes the use of mechanical and prescribed fire treatments to establish defensible space in Wildland Urban Interface designated areas in all park units and expanded fuels treatment options in KEFJ and KLGO, to adopt a range of wildfire response (e.g., immediate suppression vs. periodic surveillance) dependent on geographical area in line with inter-agency partners, and to meet NPS policy within all five coastal AK park units.
