Fire Island National Seashore » Fire Island NS Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Driving Regulation and ORV Management Plan » Document List

The National Park Service (NPS) is requesting public input on the Off-Road Vehicle (ORV) Management program for Fire Island National Seashore. This effort aims to evaluate ORV use at the Seashore and the existing ORV regulations to allow for appropriate vehicular access while protecting park resources and a safe visitor experience. In addition, the NPS plans to revise the current regulations to address changes to resources and use on Fire Island since the rule was implemented in 1987. The Environmental Assessment for this project will be publicly available and open for comment from noon on May 28 until midnight ET on June 30, 2024. The NPS plans to fulfill its public involvement requirement under the National Historic Preservation Act concurrently with the NEPA public involvement opportunities.

The NPS will host both an in-person and a virtual public meeting to share information on the proposal. The in-person meeting on June 5th will consist of an open house, a short presentation, followed by an opportunity for a facilitated question and answer session. The virtual meeting on June 12th will consist of a short presentation and a virtual question and answer session. The purpose of the meetings, and associated public comment period, is to get public input on the Environmental Assessment.
