ARPO: Osotouy Unit Cultural Landscape Report and Environmental Assessment
Arkansas Post National Memorial » ARPO: Osotouy Unit Cultural Landscape Report and Environmental Assessment » Document List
This CLR will combine prior historic research as well as findings from decades of archeological investigations to present a timeline of how this nationally significant landscape has changed over time. Human use at Osotouy began thousands of years ago as people settled near the Arkansas River and built a series of villages. Human activity extended into the 19th century with farming, and during the 20th century, local families purchased the land to protect the mounds. The CLR documents these activities and, through analysis, will define areas and landscape features that should be maintained. Eventually, a series of management alternatives will be developed, with a preferred option that provides some level of visitor use while protecting the resources. The National Park Service has contracted with landscape architects, environmental scientists, and archeologists to develop the alternatives, and is now asking for your input into the process. We hope you will contact us with your ideas about facilities and interpretive programs you would like to see offered at the site. The public is encourages to follow the planning process and register comments to this site
