The National Park Service is beginning the planning for the Comprehensive Trail Management Plan at Sunset Crater Volcano National Monument. The Comprehensive Trail Management Plan (Plan) will be developed in 2012, and we are assessing the impacts on monument resources with the proposed implementation this plan. The Plan will address ongoing maintenance needs, as well as, the creation of additional trails to accommodate increases in visitation and to improve the recreational activities in the monument. New trails will link points of interest throughout the monument and address current sustainability problems with current trails.
The proposed trails would be designed to minimize soil, vegetation, and cultural resource impacts and offer the visitor varied terrains, opportunities for views, and opportunities for routes somewhat removed from the monument infrastructure. Safety considerations would also be an important element of designing the proposed trail.
