General Management Plan / Environmental Impact Statement
image along the coastline with the beach, trees, and lighthouse Dear Friend of Apostle Islands National Lakeshore,

On behalf of our planning team, I am pleased to share this Draft General Management Plan/Wilderness Management Plan and Environmental Impact Statement for Apostle Islands National Lakeshore. Once approved, this document will provide overall guidance for the management of the Apostle Islands National Lakeshore, including those portions of it which comprise the Gaylord Nelson Wilderness, for the next 15 to 20 years. Needless to say, it is a very important document, and the National Park Service would benefit greatly from your careful analysis and thoughtful comments.

The planning team has developed a set of three action alternatives that describe how the park would be managed for resources, visitor experience and park operations. Alternative 2, the NPS preferred alternative, focuses on relatively minor enhancements that would expand visitor experience opportunities on a few islands, while preserving the park's resources and the overall park experience that most visitors tell us they love.

It's a big document, so we fully expect you will have questions about it. We've scheduled a series of open houses to provide you with opportunities to meet with park staff to discuss the plan. If you can't make one of the meetings below, feel free to contact Jim Nepstad, Chief of Planning and Resource Management, email Jim at jim_nepstad@nps.gov.
