Jenny Lake Renewal Project

Grand Teton National Park » Jenny Lake Renewal Project » Document List

Grand Teton National Park is developing a long-range plan for the renewal of trails and other facilities in the Jenny Lake area, one of the most popular day-use areas in the park.

The Jenny Lake area, situated at the base of the majestic Teton Range, provides visitor information and services and access to numerous trails. These trails provide abundant opportunities for hiking along the valley floor as well as more strenuous hikes into Grand Teton National Park's Wilderness.

Receiving over 1.5 million visitors annually, the trails and associated facilities throughout the area have deteriorated over many decades. Issues the park would like to address include: poor drainage and steep slopes on portions of the trails (some of which were built in the 1930s) resulting in continued erosion; crowding on the trails and viewing areas resulting in trampled vegetation and bare ground; challenging route finding in frontcountry and backcountry areas; and very limited interpretation of a rich cultural and natural history.

Four areas will be considered in planning: 1) South Jenny Lake, 2) Hidden Falls/Inspiration Point, 3) String Lake Outlet, and 4) Jenny Lake Overlook. Project priorities are to: retain the historic character of the area; improve route finding; expand interpretation of Jenny Lake's history, natural resources, and wilderness values; preserve and enhance its natural resources; and improve the overall visitor experience.

An environmental assessment will accompany the plan. The overall planning process is anticipated to extend over a period of approximately one year.
