Dear Friends of Biscayne National Park,
It has been some time since we last contacted you regarding the development of the general management plan for Biscayne National Park. The plan will guide park activities and management over the next 20-25 years. One element being considered for the general management plan is the establishment of marine reserve zone(s). The goal of establishing marine reserve zone(s) is to provide snorkelers and divers an opportunity to experience a healthy, natural reef with a wide diversity of fish species and sizes.
There will be three meetings held on July 21, 22, and 23, 2009, in Homestead, Miami, and Key Largo, respectively. The purpose of these meetings is to share information related to marine reserves and to gather input from the public. The format of each workshop will be as follows:
• a review of the general management plan process • a presentation about marine reserves • small group discussions • an overview of the next steps • a public comment period
In small groups, participants will identify possible locations for marine reserve zone(s) and share ideas about their management. NPS staff will facilitate the small group discussions and record attendees' ideas and input. Each part of the workshop will build on previous sections, so attendance for the entire workshop is very important.
We look forward to sharing an update with you, and hearing your thoughts and ideas about our planning efforts and possible marine reserve zone designations. Thank you for your continued interest in working together to plan for the future of Biscayne National Park.
Sincerely, Mark Lewis Superintendent
