2007 Eastern Legacy NHL Theme Study Revision

This report was published in 2007 and was conducted pursuant to Public Law 108-387, enacted on October 20, 2004, authorizing the Secretary of the Interior to update to the 1958 Lewis and Clark National Historic Landmark (NHL) Theme Study to determine the historical significance of eastern sites related to the preparation and return phases of the Corps of Discovery Expedition.

This study is strictly a NHL Theme Study revision and serves as a preliminary component of the more comprehensive Eastern Legacy Special Resource Study. Because NHL Theme Studies and Special Resource Studies are similar with regard to determining National Significance and the attached revision identifies many Eastern Legacy Sites, it is important that the reader recognizes that it does not include all sites and segments under consideration for a potential Lewis and Clark National Historic Trail Extension.

As long distance, linear landscape features, National Trails are distinctly different than typical National Register or National Historic Landmark Properties and therefore follow a different set of criteria as outlined within the National Trails System Act.
