| Description: | The National Park Service (NPS) is working to improve visitor safety and experience in the area that includes Arlington Memorial Avenue, Arlington Memorial Bridge and Memorial Circle. The results of a road safety audit conducted by the Federal Highway Administration in November 2011 were used to develop a list of short- and long-term safety and traffic improvements that was released to the public in June 2012. Many short-term improvements have now been completed, with recent progress including: re-planting vegetation impacted by social trails, repairing and adding pedestrian warning signs at crosswalks, installing rumble strips at approach to crosswalk, relocating crosswalk, and installation of new road and trail signs. Long-term improvements will require more extensive planning processes, including National Environmental Policy Act (NEPA) and National Historic Preservation Act (NHPA) compliance. An updated spreadsheet detailing the status of project planning and implementation is available for download below. |
